Egmont Key State Park is located at the mouth of Tampa Bay and is accessible only by boat. Egmont Key serves as a wildlife refuge and its rich history dates back to mid 19th century. During the Seminole War, it served as a camp for captured Seminole Indians and was later occupied by the Union Navy during the Civil War. Fort Dade was erected in 1898 during the Spanish American War to protect the mouth of Tampa Bay and remained active until 1923. Today, all that remains are the ruins of the old fort, the brick roads and the working lighthouse that has stood since 1858! While at Egmont Key, you are free to explore the island, the fort ruins, and visit the lighthouse. You might even see the famous tortoises that are native to the island. While on the Island, you can snorkel, swim, or simply relax on the beach and take in the view of the pristine waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Whatever you choose, your day at Egmont will not soon be forgotten! A full day excursion to Egmont Key begins at 9am; a 1-1/2 hour journey through Tampa Bay and under the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. |
